City Slickers and The Meaning of Life

As a kid I watched the movie City Slickers and garnered some unexpected wisdom. In the film Billy Crystal plays Mitch, a...well city slicker who ventures out to a dude ranch thanks to a midlife crisis. Jack Palance true to form, plays Curly- a wise old cowboy. They have a conversation about the meaning of life: Curly holds up his index fingers and says, "do you know what the secret to life is? This." Mitch replies, "your finger?" Curly explains, "one thing, just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean s**t." Mitch then questions, "that's great, but what's the one thing?" "That's what you gotta figure out," Curly says... End scene. Mitch seemed to have it all, yet he was still missing the one thing. As a child I assumed the things that gave life meaning as an adult were things that just came along with growing up- marriage, career, family, good friends... Little did I know none...

GOOD WORKS: Food Bank Donations

Prior to volunteering at a food bank I never thought about what gets donated and how the vagueness of “non-perishable goods” often renders a lot of what is donated useless. For example, in order to make some boxed rices and pastas, oil or butter is needed. Mac and cheese requires milk, Hamburger Helper needs...well hamburger. Families often do not have these extras as they aren’t readily available from food banks. So I’ve compiled a list of things that are highly needed... Considering most food banks are unable to keep perishable goods, boxed milk is always extremely helpful. 1. If your food bank accepts perishable goods (many don't)- butter, margarine, eggs, milk, fresh meat, and fresh produce are highly desirable. As is bread since a lot of peanut butter and jelly is donated. 2. Cooking oil 3. Sugar and flour 4. Boxed milk is a God send as kids need milk for their cereal 5. Dishwashing and laundry detergent 6. Feminine hygiene products are always in short...
